Brunei cast net wide to lure M’sian stars in Super League overhaul

PETALING JAYA: Brunei are planning a major squad overhaul after finishing 10th in last season’s Super League, with several Malaysian players among their transfer targets.

Sources close to the club have confirmed that Scottish coach Jamie McAllister’s management team are in talks to sign Malaysian Under-23 striker Fergus Tierney and winger Safawi Rasid.

While neither move has been finalised, negotiations are understood to be progressing, with midfielder Ryan Lambert, defender Nicholas Swirad and goalkeeper Samuel Somerville also on Brunei’s radar as McAllister looks to reshape the squad.

The club have retained Australian attacker Jordan Murray in an attacking midfield role, while Portuguese Miguel Oliveira is set to feature on the flanks.

New signing Oscar Santis of Guatemala is already generating excitement, with the club describing him as “the player to watch” due to his ability to operate on either wing or as a striker.

Meanwhile, experienced midfielder Mehdi Abeid, who has played for Newcastle, Al-Nasr and Istanbul Buyuksehir, will undergo assessment alongside Nigerian midfielder Augustine Oladapo, who featured for ES Setif before joining Saudi first-division side Al-Wehda.

Both are on trial rather than signed, but Abeid’s pedigree underlines Brunei’s ambition this transfer window.

The club are also in talks with Dundee centreback Clark Robertson and have quietly secured Kelantan winger Mohd Farris Izdiham Awang Kechik, adding another Malaysian to what is shaping up to be a exciting rebuild.

Whether bigger names such as Tierney and Safawi follow remains to be seen, but Brunei’s intent this off-season is unmistakable.
