PETALING JAYA: Guatemalan winger Oscar Santis will bring valuable pedigree to Brunei after completing his move to the Borneo club for the upcoming Super League season.
The 27-year-old had featured in last year’s Gold Cup, where Guatemala stunned a star-studded Canada side featuring Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David in the quarter-finals on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
In the semi-finals, Guatemala narrowly lost 2-1 to the United States.
Santis said he hopes to show his quality in Malaysia, calling the Super League the ideal stage to test himself against top opposition.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity. This is a club with a great history, and they have high and clear targets for their second season in the Malaysian League,” he said.
“When I spoke with the management and the coach (Jamie McAllister), I could clearly see their vision and their determination to bring me in, and that gave me great confidence to join.
“This is the right environment for me to keep growing as a player, challenge myself, and help the team achieve success.
“I believe in my ability, quality and talent, which I’ve shown in past tournaments, and now I want to prove the same here.”
Santis has 57 international caps since making his debut for Guatemala in 2021, and has scored 19 goals.
Alongside Santis, Brunei have strengthened their foreign contingent with the signings of Ghanaian centreback Ebenezer Abban and Indonesian fullback Muhammad Toha. They have also retained Filipino centreback Amani Aguinaldo, Australian striker Jordan Murray and Portuguese winger Miguel Oliveira.
