BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: As part of efforts to preserve and promote the customs, culture and heritage of the Dusun community for present and future generations, the Kampong Ukong Village Consultative Council organised the Adau Gayoh Celebration 2026 at the Kampong Ukong Sports Complex Monday (June 1).

Legislative Council member and Penghulu of Mukim Ukong Mohamad Danial @ Tekpin bin Ya’akub, the guest of honour, presented prizes to the winners of the Best Traditional Attire Competition and the Traditional Dusun Guling Tangan Competition.

Various activities and competitions showcasing traditional cultural elements were organised to enliven the celebration, including the Dusun Language Translation Competition, aimed at introducing and strengthening the use of the mother tongue among the younger generation to ensure its preservation and prevent the ethnic language from being lost over time.

The Guling Tangan Competition for male and female youth categories was held to highlight a Dusun tradition that requires skill, agility and teamwork among participants.

The competition also served as a platform to revive a traditional pastime that is becoming increasingly rare among today’s younger generation.

The celebration not only served as a platform to showcase the uniqueness of Dusun culture, but also encouraged youth participation in community and cultural activities.

The event provided an opportunity for the public to gain a deeper understanding of the customs, traditional games and heritage values that form an important part of the local community’s identity.

Through such events, the organisers hope that the cultural heritage of the Dusun community will continue to be preserved and passed on to future generations, while strengthening the spirit of unity, cooperation and camaraderie among village residents and the wider community. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
