BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Two foreign nationals (pic) were detained recently by the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) for alleged trespassing and theft of agarwood (gaharu) in a forested area in Tutong District.
According to the RBPF, following a public tip-off, a special operation in Kampong Sebatang Sentul, Tutong District, led to both suspects being apprehended.
They were taken to the Tutong Police Station for investigation.
If convicted under Section 27(1) of the Forestry Act (Chapter 46) for the illegal possession of forest produce, they face a fine of up to BND50,000 (US$38,746), imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
The RBPF said it takes all unlawful activities involving illegal encroachment, exploitation and theft of forest resources with utmost seriousness.
Such offences not only violate the laws of Brunei but also cause damage to the ecosystem, affect biodiversity and threaten the sustainability of the nation’s natural heritage.
RBPF said it will continue to intensify patrols, monitoring and enforcement operations, particularly in areas identified as high risk, in cooperation with government agencies.
The RBPF also expressed its appreciation to the public for their cooperation and vigilance in providing information that contributed to the success of the operation.
Members of the public with information relating to illegal forest encroachment, the theft of agarwood, or other criminal activities can report to the RBPF. Information will be treated with the strictest confidence and investigated accordingly. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
