Over 130 people suffer food poisoning in two separate incidents in Japan

TOKYO: More than 130 people have developed symptoms of food poisoning in two separate incidents in central and eastern Japan in recent days, according to local media reports.

In one incident, 74 people experienced diarrhoea, vomiting and other symptoms after eating a traditional Japanese set meal at a hotel in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, Kyodo News reported Saturday (July 18).

Nine of the affected diners were hospitalised. Local health authorities determined the incident to be a case of food poisoning and ordered the suspension of operations at the hotel's Japanese cuisine kitchen, the report said.

In a separate incident, 64 people, including 59 children aged between one and six and five staff members at a kindergarten in Hachioji, western Tokyo, developed symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pain, TBS Television reported Friday.

One child was hospitalised. The Hachioji public health center identified the incident as food poisoning and ordered the kindergarten to suspend operations for three days starting Friday. - Xinhua
