SYDNEY: A man died in a car on Sunday (July 19) in the east Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) after a police pursuit that crossed the state of Queensland and NSW border.
NSW Police received a report at about 1:00 a.m. local time from Queensland Police Service that a man, armed with a firearm, had driven across the border into NSW following a pursuit, police said in a statement.
NSW Police commenced a search of the area before locating the man driving a car on Sexton Hill Drive, Banora Point in the state, police said.
Officers directed the man to stop, but he failed to do so, and a pursuit was initiated, the statement said.
The pursuit continued through multiple nearby suburbs before road spikes were deployed against the car twice, NSW Police said.
The man continued to drive from police until finally stopping down an embankment on Kyogle Road, Kunghur, at about 2:00 a.m.
Police established a perimeter around the car. As police approached the vehicle, they found the driver unconscious.
Officers immediately commenced CPR on the man, but he died at the scene.
He was yet to be formally identified but was believed to be a 25-year-old man from Queensland, NSW Police said.
Police established a crime scene, seizing a firearm from the vehicle for forensic examination.
A critical incident team would lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, the statement said. - Xinhua
