SEREMBAN: Police have obtained an order to remand an activist for two days in its probe into a criminal intimidation case, says state police chief Dep Comm Datuk Alzafny Ahmad.
The state chief police officer said Magistrate Naeilah Nikrul Tarmizi allowed the 33-year-old suspect to be remanded until Monday (July 20).
He said Tamim Dahari Abdul Razak was being investigated for allegedly vandalising a "soolam", a sacred symbol in Hinduism, at the former Sri Maha Muniswarar Temple in Langkawi, Kedah.
Khalid said the Attorney-General's Chambers had ordered for Tamim Dahari to be charged with the relevant offences.
"The suspect is being probed under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities or network services," he said.
Earlier, the suspect was brought to the court around 9.40am in a police van.
The media had on Saturday (July 18) reported that the suspect surrendered to the police after he was believed to have fled to a neighbouring country a few months ago.
He gave himself up at the Port Dickson police station at around 12.45pm.
According to the police, the suspect had re-entered Malaysia illegally through Kelantan.
The police had been looking for the suspect following a report lodged by a man claiming that the former had threatened him on Facebook.
Police said they tried looking for the suspect in Kajang, Selangor, but could not locate him.
A police probe later revealed that the suspect fled to Thailand via Bukit Kayu Hitam on March 9.
In March, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police were working with their Thai counterparts to bring the suspect back after he was believed to have fled there.
