Myanmar demolishes more illegal buildings linked to online scam operations

YANGON: Myanmar authorities have continued demolishing illegal buildings that were allegedly used for online scam and gambling operations, according to state media reports.

A joint task force involving security personnel, local authorities and administrative officials has been conducting raids and clearance operations in the Shwe Kokko and nearby areas, which have been identified as major hubs for online fraud activities.

Authorities said 635 illegal buildings in KK Park had previously been identified and completely demolished in phases to prevent scam networks from re-establishing operations there.

In Shwe Kokko, officials inspected 322 buildings and found 77 allegedly connected to online scam businesses. Of those, 57 buildings were designated for demolition using heavy machinery, while 20 others are scheduled for controlled demolition with explosives.

On May 25, two four-story buildings linked to scam operations were torn down, adding to a previously demolished 13-story building. Authorities said 74 illegal buildings still remain to be destroyed in the area.

The government stated it would continue working with domestic groups and neighbouring countries to eliminate online scam operations from Myanmar. - Eleven Media/ANN
