Three Myanmar sailors die from oxygen shortage on ship in Indonesian waters

YANGON: Three Myanmar sailors died while working in Indonesian waters, and their bodies were brought back to Yangon, according to reports.

The deceased sailors were identified as Thura Zaw, 38, Zaw Min Htet, 34, and Han Htoo Aung, 28. They reportedly died while working aboard a foreign cargo ship in Indonesian territorial waters.

According to the announcement by the Free Funeral Service Society (Yangon), the bodies were transported from Yangon International Airport to North Okkalapa General Hospital on May 24, and later taken to Yayway Cemetery for funeral arrangements.

A friend close to Han Htoo Aung wrote on social media: “Rest in peace, my younger brother Han Htoo Aung. I’m deeply saddened that I could not accompany you on your final journey. Though everyone must one day walk this path, you left far too early. A kind-hearted person like you will surely reach a peaceful afterlife.”

Members of the Myanmar seafarers’ community said the three sailors died from oxygen deprivation after entering an enclosed compartment on the cargo ship for inspection work.

A similar incident also occurred several months ago aboard the MV Guo Qiang 8, where two Myanmar crew members, Win Htut Win (aka Thae Maung) and Oke Soe Aung, died from oxygen shortage while working inside an enclosed space in the ship’s engine room. - Eleven Media/ANN
