BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Students, teachers, parents and guardians at St John School were given greater awareness of online scams during an Online Safety and Scam Prevention talk held on May 9 at the school hall.
The session aimed to educate participants on the warning signs and risks of scams, which continue to rise both locally and globally.
Present at the event were Village Head of Pekan Kuala Belait Mohammad Sufrizal Hamdan, school principal Dr Teh Keng Watt, members of the school committee and representatives from the Belait community.
The talk was delivered by Chief Inspector Adinin Ahmad, together with officers from the Cybercrime Investigation Division of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF), who highlighted common scam tactics currently being reported.
Participants were also briefed on statistics showing increasing financial losses linked to scam cases over the years, underscoring the growing threat of cybercrime.
The session further provided practical advice on how to avoid falling victim to scams, including steps to verify suspicious messages and online requests.
In addition, attendees were introduced to Brunei’s Anti-Scam Hotline 16993, which serves as a first point of contact for individuals who may have been targeted, offering immediate guidance and verification before a police report is lodged. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
