BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Authorities in Miri, Sarawak, are exploring a proposal to establish a dedicated direct bus service between Miri and Brunei International Airport to improve cross-border tourism and transport connectivity.
According to a news report in Malaysia, Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man said the initiative aims to connect both airports and strengthen the movement of international and domestic tourists between Malaysia and Brunei.
“Miri’s position as a neighbour to Brunei offers special opportunities for tourists to visit attractions in both countries,” he said in a statement on Friday (May 9).
He said, “The proposed service would bridge the 160-kilometre journey between Miri and Brunei International Airport, with travelling time estimated at between three and four hours.
“As Brunei International Airport serves as a busy hub for international travellers, the direct connection is expected to tap into opportunities to increase tourist traffic and further elevate Miri as a global destination.”

Chiew revealed that he has met with officers from the Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board and officials from the Transport Ministry to discuss the logistics of the service.
The proposed bus route is expected to operate weekly with a frequency focused on passenger convenience, catering for airline passengers, tourists, cross-border workers, local residents, and students.
At present, there are no scheduled bus services between the two airports, leaving travellers to rely mainly on private vehicles.
Chiew added that bilateral discussions with Brunei’s transport authorities are expected to take place soon to further develop the proposal. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
