Camarines Sur folk in Philippines urged to stay alert after tsunami warning

LEGAZPI CITY: Authorities in Camarines Sur on Wednesday (July 30) advised coastal communities to remain alert following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck near Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has issued a tsunami advisory, warning of minor sea-level changes along the country’s eastern seaboard, including Camarines Sur.

Governor Luis Raymund Villafuerte, in a social media post, urged residents to stay away from beaches and for boat owners to secure their vessels or head to deeper waters.

“There is no threat of a destructive tsunami, but precautions are necessary for everyone’s safety,” Villafuerte said.

The provincial government is working with local disaster response offices and is closely monitoring developments. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
