PETALING JAYA: A recent move by the Penang government to cull dogs in order to eradicate the recent Rabies outbreak has drawn mixed reactions from the public.
A Facebook post by The Star which drew over 150 shares and received 50 comments, showed that though some people were pleased with the idea of the state government to contain the disease, others were concerned by the cruelty to the dogs.
Facebook user Werner Hoo wrote; "Once someone gets rabies and dies, blame state government for not taking care of human life. By the way, rabies has no cure.
"They eradicate all strays dog, get blamed for being cruel and not appreciative of lives.Human lives are priority and Penang always sticks to their plan and vision , they don't allow any diseases to spread in Penang.
Tengku Zariru wrote "100% fatality rate, sure death, if bitten by rabid dog and not getting anti rabies injection before the first symptom started to show.
"If the first symptom appears, it's already too late. Dogs, cats and bats can get and carry rabies but in almost all human cases, dogs are the source," he wrote.
A lot of other users also expressed gratitude to the Penang government for managing the situation at its roots.
"Kudos to 3 state on curbing before become worse," wrote GP Selvan while Choy San wrote, “Human life a priority. Once rabies infest it will be hard to control.”
Others who felt the disease could be curbed with other methods such as vaccination however did not share the sentiment.
Callie Hor wote "Rabies can be contained with vaccine not culling. Human life matters but so do those of dogs as they are living breathing beings too.
"You find 10 men with HIV, you kill them all? For God's sake this is the 21st century, they should know culling all is not the standard way just the cheapest way,".
"Please use vaccines and quarantine instead of culling. Only some are infected, but you want to kill all the dogs (might reach 100,000 dog lives), when there's other alternative? is it right?
"So many NGO are ready waiting to help, donation drive also on going alr, pls give them vaccines and spare their life," wrote Rachel MeiSia Ooi
Boo Ong Bee Cecilia wrote, " Murderer!! Stop killing!! This is no longer zaman dulu!! Have mercy! Find a solution! If your kid got infected with an incurable virus, will u give up on them or will u find a way to cure them? Its a innocent life!"
