KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman has obtained a warrant of arrest against the UK-based Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown.

In a statement issued yesterday evening, CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh said the warrant, obtained at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, was for offences under Section 124B and 124I of the Penal Code for activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

“We will proceed with the applications to place her on the Aseanapol wanted list, as well as the Interpol red notice,” he said.

Rewcastle-Brown, a Sarawak-born journalist, has been involved in publishing controversial reports of the state investment fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, whose dealings are being probed by the authorities in Malaysia.

The former BBC reporter is also known to be an activist who writes about matters in Malaysia from the United Kingdom through the whistleblowing website which she founded in 2010.

In addition to the website, Rewcastle-Brown also runs Radio Free Sarawak to broadcast her findings to Sarawakians.

Rewcastle-Brown, when contacted, called the police move “counter-productive” for Malaysia.

She said Malaysian police would be unable to extradite her, given that the offences the Malaysian police were accusing her of were non-existent in Britain.

She also said that she was unclear as to whether she was accused of “forging false documents” or obtaining documents through “criminal leakages” as she had been accused of both in the past few days.
