MALAYSIA is making significant strides towards its goal of increasing the number of professional accountants to 60,000 by 2030.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) recently celebrated the admission of a new cohort of members into its esteemed ranks during the recent ICAEW Malaysia Annual Dinner 2024.

This milestone highlights the nation’s commitment to enhancing financial expertise and steering Malaysia towards sustainable economic growth.

Global perspective

ICAEW chief executive Alan Vallance highlighted the global impact of the profession and the opportunities it offers.

“The accountancy profession is not just influential across the global economy; it’s critical to economic growth, stability and prosperity,” he said.

“I encourage those of you who have been members for some time to consider the younger generations coming up behind you, and the support and inspiration you can provide through mentoring and guidance.”

Government vision

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, an ICAEW member and guest-of-honour at the ICAEW Malaysia Annual Dinner, highlighted the indispensable role of chartered accountants in shaping Malaysia’s economic landscape.

“The foundation of any successful economy is built upon the strength of its financial systems, and at the core are skilled and ethical accounting professionals. Having the right accountants in the right organisations is not just beneficial – it is essential,” he said.

“As we transition towards a digitalised economy, professional accountants will become even more pivotal in guiding our economy towards new frontiers.”

Reflecting on his own journey, Rafizi noted, “One of the best decisions in my life was to become an ICAEW chartered accountant. The training and knowledge I gained through the qualification have been invaluable in my journey as a public servant.”

Commitment to professional excellence

ICAEW Malaysia head Shenola Gonzales expressed her enthusiasm for the importance of fostering the next generation of finance leaders.

“Our journey in Malaysia is driven by a commitment to engage members and train future chartered accountants. It’s not just a task; it’s our passion. Seeing students grow, succeed and eventually join our ranks is truly rewarding – they are the future of the profession.”

The value of chartered accountants

ICAEW China and South-East Asia director Elaine Hong emphasised the importance of fostering the next generation of chartered accountants.

“Our ICAEW community in Malaysia is defined by an enduring spirit, shared values and a collective commitment to excellence,” she said.

“The remarkable progress we have witnessed, both here and globally, is a testament to these qualities.”

New chartered accountants share their journeys

Newly admitted ICAEW member Leong Khai Qi discovered ICAEW during her university days and decided to pursue the qualification with the support of her family during her degree.

“ICAEW gave me a different perspective and understanding of the business world. It prepares individuals with real-life scenarios and ways to navigate them – and this knowledge and skills are useful at work!” said Leong.

Kalyani Jayabalan pursued the ICAEW qualification immediately after high school, seeking a faster, practical and challenging academic experience.

“The ICAEW ACA’s in-built internship and employment requirements allowed me to gain early practical context for the concepts in the modules. This pathway meant I could complete my professional papers within five years of graduating high school and start my career as a full-time auditor earlier than many of my peers,” she said.
