PETALING JAYA: The men’s 4x200m freestyle relay quartet of Khiew Hoe Yean, Arvin Shaun Singh, Ananda Lim Yin Chuen and Jayden Tan have another chance to make it a memorable Commonwealth Games for Malaysian swimming.
The quartet gets a second chance to gun down the national record after advancing to the final at Tollcross International Swimming Centre yesterday.
The foursome clocked 7:39.38s to finish third fastest in Heat 1.
Malaysia thus qualified for the final as the fifth fastest team from the heats.
Favourites Scotland, led by world champion swimmer Dean Scott, were fastest in Heat 1 with 7:17.18s followed by Wales (7:35.05).
They missed out on the national record of 7:19.50s set at the Vietnam SEA Games in 2023 but have earned a second shot in the final later in the evening.
Hoe Yean, Terence Ng, Ananda and Arvin were the members of the national record-breaking team at that time. Terence has since retired from competitive swimming.
There is no break for Hoe Yean as he will return to the pool today to swim the men’s 800m freestyle event.
A medal in the newly added event for the Commonwealth Games will be hard to come by given that Hoe Yean is up against a world class field led by reigning Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen of Northern Ireland but improving on his national record time of 8:01.30s is certainly within his reach if gets his act right.
A multiple SEA Games gold medallist swimmer, Hoe Yean set the national record in Australia back in 2024.
