Hoe Yean stays on track amid coaching transition

Light and easy: Malaysian swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean is eyeing to make a splash at Asian Games in Japan this year.

KUALA LUMPUR: Khiew Hoe Yean may still be waiting to find out who his next coach will be, but the national swimmer is not standing still.

The 23-year-old, along with the rest of the squad, is pressing on under assistant coach Magnus Andersen following head coach Eric Anderson’s departure at the end of December.

Hoe Yean is wasting no time building on his breakthrough Thailand SEA Games campaign as he sets his sights on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

At the Thailand SEA Games in December, Hoe Yean swept a double gold in a single editions when came out tops in the men’s 200m and 400m freestyle events.

Hoe Yean is learning to embrace the change in coaching set-up.

“The head coach just left but I have been communicating a lot with the assistant coach,” he said.

“It should not be a problem but it’s just that every time there is a change of coach, the adaptation process will take time.

“I hope we can get a coach under a long-term plan and I believe that’s what they want to and I don’t interfere.

“Whoever comes will be my coach and I will give my 100 per cent best,” said Hoe Yean.

Yesterday, Hoe Yean swam with ease to sweep the gold medals in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle events in the 19 above and Open category of the Malaysian Invitational Age-Group Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil.

“This is just a training meet for me, to test the level I’m at. We will start a new training block after Chinese New Year break,” added Hoe Yean, who also intends to catch up on his studies in the meantime.

“I’m almost done with my second year, so there is a lot of catching up to do after the SEA Games,” said Hoe Yean, who is pursuing Bachelor Degree in Computer Science at UCSI University.
