Strong chemistry drives Malaysian aquathlon relay bronze

CHONBURI: The national aquathlon swimmers had to train separately but that did not stop them from showing good teamwork to splash to a bronze medal at the Thailand SEA Games yesterday.

Esther Joy Chen, Cindy Sui, Harith Aiman Adha Norasli and Isaac Tan clocked a time of 1’08:37s in the mixed relay final at the Klaeng District in Rayong.

Indonesia bagged gold with 1’04:14s while the Philippines came in second at 1’04:58s.

Although the quartet comes from different running and swimming clubs across Malaysia, they showed strong chemistry when it mattered most.

The 21-year-old Esther, who is competing in her second SEA Games after the 2021 Hanoi edition, credited team spirit for the podium finish.

“The race went well and we all performed strongly, especially considering we are from different teams,” said Esther.

“I’m happy that we all put aside our differences and did this for Malaysia.

“But for me personally, I think I could have done better. It wasn’t my best day out there.

“The temperature picked up as well by the time my turn came, so maybe that was a small factor in the results. But I live in Malaysia, so I think I can take some heat,” said Esther.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Harith said he had to juggle his schoolwork and training sessions.

“I had focused on my run. However, it wasn’t easy, as I had to balance both training and studying for my SPM this year,” said Harith.

“I’m thankful for the trust that was placed in me to compete.”

The aquathlon event includes a 2.5km run, followed by a 1km swim, and another 2.5km run.
