Isabelle splashes to second gold, smashes 14-year-old 100m breaststroke record at age-group meet

PETALING JAYA: Young breaststroker Isabelle Chiyi Buckley outshone Paris Olympian swimmer Tan Rouzin for a second time in the SEA Age-Group swimming championships in Bangkok.

The 15-year-old splashed to her second gold for Malaysia in the girls' Under-15 100m breaststroke event in 1:12.52s, breaking former SEA Games gold medallist Christina Loh's 14-year-old record of 1:12.90s set back in 2010.

Thailand's Natthakitta Leekitchakorn (1:12.53) and Vietnam's Thuy Hien Nguyen (1:13.38) took silver and bronze, respectively.

Isabelle had also smashed the meet record in winning the 50m breaststroke race on Friday (Dec 6).

Isabelle, of English-Malaysian parentage, clocked 32.72s in the final, eclipsing Thailand's Nisha Kijkanakorn's 2018 record of 33.27s.

Natthakitta (33.32s) settled for silver while Thuy Hien (33.39s) took bronze.

Rouxin, who made her Olympic debut for Malaysia in August, managed a silver in 1:13.29s in the girls' Under-18 100m breaststroke event.

Thailand's Chanittra Rodsom (1:12.64s) won the gold while compatriot Wanichaya Tangtanasub (1:14.40s) got the bronze.

Rouxin had also settled for silver with 33.35s behind the Thai swimmer in the 50m breaststroke final on Friday.

In the girls' Under-13 category, Yuet Ting Aw joined the record-breaking spree in the 100m breaststroke, posting 1:13.34s to smash Ginn Samantha Louisa Yeo's 2010 record of 1:13.71s.

Thailand's Pimchanok Chinveeraphan (1:14.03s) and Areeya Phuangthong (1:16.28s) completed the podium.

Ting Aw also secured her second gold of the meet by winning the 50m breaststroke title with a record-breaking 33.46s.

She surpassed the 33.96s mark set by Singapore's Roanne Ru in 2004.
