Jayden comes close to breaking national mark in 400m IM

PETALING JAYA: Swimmer Jayden Tan came agonisingly close to breaking his national record in his final outing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The 22-year-old clocked 4:23.29s to finish eighth in the men’s 400m individual medley final at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Jayden was not expected to make a charge for the podium but he would be satisfied with his latest effort, finishing just 0.05s off his national record (4:23.24s) set at the Cambodia SEA Games in 2023.

The Kuala Lumpur lad was the only swimmer to qualify for an individual final in Glasgow, having secured his place after clocking 4:25.64s in the heats earlier.

A specialist in the 400m individual medley, Jayden has won two SEA Games medals in the event.

New Zealand’s Lewis Clareburt, the 2024 world champion, won the race in 4:08.72s.

Australia’s William Petric followed closely for the silver in 4:11.02s.

Khiew Hoe Yean won his 1,500m freestyle heat in 15:29.30s.

Arvin Shaun Singh and Ananda Lim Yin Chuen placed 17th (1:51.21s) and 19th (1:51.76s) respectively in the men’s 200m freestyle heats.
