PETALING JAYA: Ng Eain Yow has a golden opportunity to stake his claim as one of the world’s best when he leads Malaysia’s sole challenge in the men’s event at the Squash on Fire Open in Washington.
All eyes are now on the 26 year-old, who recently broke into the world’s top 10, joining the exclusive ranks of Ong Beng Hee and Azlan Iskandar as only the third Malaysian to achieve the feat.
The tournament marks an important milestone in Eain Yow’s journey, as he looks to prove he can thrive under pressure among the world elite. Seeded second in the competition, the Kuala Lumpur-born player will be keen to show he belongs at the very top.
Eain Yow received a first-round bye and is set to open his campaign against American player Shahjahan Khan.
On paper, the world No. 10 should have little difficulty against the 60th-ranked Khan, whom he defeated in the second round of the Malaysia Cup last year.
Also set to begin her campaign in the women’s event is Rachel Arnold.
The fourth seed will take on England’s Alicia Mead in the opening round. Rachel will be looking to repeat her winning performance from their last meeting at the El Gouna International first round last year.
Earlier, compatriot Sanjay Jeeva suffered a shock exit in the first round after falling to France’s Edwin Clain.
Despite holding a higher ranking at world No. 67 compared to Clain’s No. 88, the 26-year-old Malaysian struggled to find his footing and went down in straight games, 8-11, 8-11, 5-11.
It was also Sanjay’s second defeat to Clain this year, having suffered a similar result at the Liverpool Cricket Club Open last month.
