GLASGOW: Rocking a pink-purple hairdo and a unique white-and-orange horn on top of its head, Finnie, the unicorn, will be one of the busiest during the Commonwealth Games, which started yesterday.
Why? It is because Finnie has a special duty this Scottish summer – it’s the official mascot of the Commonwealth Games, which returns to Glasgow after 12 years.
“Sport’s my absolute favourite thing,” Finnie says, as reported in the Olympics.com. “I’m here to cheer on every athlete, bring the buzz and maybe add a little magic to the Games while I’m at it.”
A self-described “hype-master”, Finnie will root for the 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing in the multi-sport event, where 215 gold medals are up for grabs.
“If the energy’s dipping, I’m there with a grin, a wave, maybe even a wee dance,” Finnie adds.
“If it’s tense, I’ll help lift the nerves. I’m there for the big cheers, the quiet moments and everything in between.
“Whatever the mood is, I help turn it into something magic.”
Finnie, the unicorn mascot inspired by Scotland’s national animal, loves its signature poses, one of them being the “all heart”, done by curling fingers inward to form two mirroring “C” shapes.
“It’s friendly, open and says ‘You’re part of this too’”, explains Finnie, whose personality is known to have “a bit of sass, loads of cool”.
From athletics and basketball to judo, boxing and everything in between, Finnie will be at every event of the 10 core sports.
