Nicodemus is moving on after missing out on medal

PETALING JAYA: Powerlifter Nicodemus Manggoi Moses did not succeed in his bid to give Malaysia a podium finish but he is not disheartened.

The 33-year-old still believe he is on the right track to shine at the Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya in October.

On Friday evening, the powerlifting competition concluded with Nicodemus finishing fourth in the men’s heavyweight category (over 72kg). Nicodemus lifted 200kg to collect 120.3 points in the final.

Nigerian athlete Riluwan Idris collected 132.8 points with a best lift of 208kg to secure the gold while England’s Matthew Harding won silver after lifting 199kg to collect 131.0 points.

Bronze went to India’s Jhandu Kumar, who recorded a best lift of 190kg to collect 130.9 points.

Bryan Junency Gustin, the elder brother of Paralympic champion Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, failed to record any valid lifts after all three of his attempts at 196kg, 196kg and 201kg failed.

Nicodemus, who is from Sarawak and has been involved in the sport since 2021, accepted the outcome with mixed feelings.

It is not the main category for Nicodemus in Glasgow as he usually competes in the men’s 97kg category in international competitions.

“I will return to my usual weight category for the Asian Para Games and hopefully, I will try to be on the podium again,” added Nicodemus, who claimed bronze at the last Asian Para Games in Hangzhou in 2023.
