DESARU: The gloomy weather makes triathlete Jed Radbone (pic) smile as he gets set to defend his Ironman 70.3 Desaru Coast title today.

Last year, the Australian triathlete emerged victorious after completing the 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21.1km run with a time of 4’13:02, despite the scorching weather conditions.

“Last year was tough with the extremely hot conditions. However, this time, the cooler weather may be more advantageous for me,” said the 26-year-old.

It has been a rainy past couple of days along the picturesque Desaru coastline, and the weather forecast for race day suggests the same conditions will prevail.

While the ominous clouds excite Radbone, he remains cautious about the potential detrimental effects of the accompanying winds.

“If the wind is too strong, it will be challenging to maintain a consistent rhythm on the bike. Hopefully, the wind does not get too crazy.”

Radbone enters Johor with momentum on his side, having recently won the Ironman Goseong 70.3 in Korea last month.

“It feels surreal to be coming here as the defending champion, but the win (in Korea) has undoubtedly made me more confident.

“I am feeling fit and prepared, so we will simply have to wait and observe the outcome of tomorrow’s race.”
