Three simple putting drills (Part II)

From knee stability to aim point focus, these fundamentals build steadier strokes

WHEN we look back on a round, it always becomes clear where a few better putts could have saved you shots – whether it be through steadier lag putting or the confidence to knock in those nervy five footers.

In this second part of our putting series, these simple drills will help you sharpen what many consider the most important part of the game.

4 Keep the knees stable

Your knees should remain still and steady throughout the stroke. Keep the flex and lateral position constant to promote a quiet motion driven by the shoulders. This stability helps you return the putter square and start the ball on the correct line.

5 The spiral drill

A superb test of touch and consistency. Set tees in a spiral around a hole on a flat section of the green, spaced one foot apart from two feet out to 10 feet. Using a single ball, putt from the shortest to the longest. Try to complete the entire spiral without a miss – it’s harder than it looks and brilliant for building confidence.

6 Look at the aim point

If the putt breaks and you need to start it outside the hole, don’t stare at the cup before you stroke it. Focus on your aim point instead.

Your mind and body naturally try to send the ball where your eyes are directed, so looking at the correct start line reinforces the stroke you need.
