Veteran Mahali eager to steer Melaka to strong finish

PETALING JAYA: Age is just a number for veteran Mahali Jasuli (pic).

The 37-year-old hopes his leadership and experience can inspire Melaka to a strong finish to the Super League season when they take on in-form Immigration at Kangar Stadium in Perlis today.

Mahali insists he still has plenty to offer the game despite the physical demands of playing multiple positions.

“I’ve been in the professional game since 2007,” said Mahali.

“I’ve played on the biggest stages, adapted to different tactical systems and styles of play, and even at my age I’m still trying to adapt quickly to compete with the younger players,” he said.

“As you grow older, things do change and it can become tougher physically. But experience helps you adapt.

“I also want to show younger players that senior players can still perform well and be good role models.”

He began his senior career with Harimau Muda from 2007 to 2012 before going on to represent Selangor, Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT), PKNS, Petaling Jaya City, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka.

He also played for Harimau Malaya and won the 2010 AFF Cup and SEA Games gold medals in 2009 and 2011.

Mahali, who joined the Mousedeer during the January transfer window, said retirement was still far from his mind.

“Personally, if given the chance, I would like to continue playing for Melaka,” he said.

“Melaka are a good side with the potential to do well next season.

“If the coach trusts me and gives me the opportunity, I will continue playing.”

Mahali has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing two assists.

Melaka are 11th with 18 points from 23 games in the league, while Immigration, who have won three consecutive matches and are pushing for a top-five finish, are sixth with 31 points from 23 matches, just two points behind fifth-placed Terengganu.
