Asean C’ship Trophy Tour will make a pit stop in KL

PETALING JAYA: The Asean Championship Trophy Tour will make the third stop on its journey around South-East Asia in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Former national players Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (pic), Mahali Jasuli and Amri Yahyah, who played in the title-winning team in 2010, will be special guests when the trophy goes on display at AEON Shah Alam from 11am until 5pm.

Entry for the event, which will feature a series of unique experiences, will be free with Meet & Greet passes available to be won via the Asean United FC website and @aseanutdfc on social media platforms.

Norshahrul, Mahali and Amri will participate in a football clinic designed for aspiring youth players as part of a CSR initiative being hosted by title partners Mitsubishi Electric in conjunction with the Asean Championship.

Lessons and mini games using the “Okada” method, named after the famed Takeshi Okada, will be taught by coaches of Imabari FC, a Japanese professional club in the Meiji Yasuda J3 League chaired by the coach who led Japan to their first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1998 and the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

The Asean Championship is the region’s leading football event and the competition returns for its 15th edition in December with Thailand looking to defend the title they won for a record seventh time in 2022.

In the 28 years since its creation, the event has grown from a two week-long centralised tournament into a competition that is currently played across the region over a six-week period in front of sold-out stadiums in Hanoi, Bangkok, Manila, Jakarta and beyond.

The 2024 edition kicks off with a two-legged qualifier on Oct 8 and 15 featuring Brunei and Timor-Leste, with the winners advancing to the group phase, which begins on Dec 8.
