Mahali thankful to be given chance to play as a striker

PETALING JAYA: Veteran Mahali Jasuli is grateful to Petaling Jaya City coach P. Maniam for believing in his ability to deliver as a professional footballer.

The now 32-year-old Mahali, a regular rightback with Selangor and PKNS, decided to join PJ City last season and has no regrets especially after Maniam reverted him to a striker’s role.

Maniam made the bold move of taking over injured striker Darren Lok’s position although he had replacements like R. Kogileswaran and Khyril Muhymeen.

“After Darren’s injury, the coach asked me if I could play as a striker. To be honest, I was really surprised. However, I told the coach that I will try to slowly get back into the rhythm and try to be at the same level as other strikers in the Super League,” said Mahali.

“The coach dared to play an attacking role as he knew I had played in that role during my time with the Harimau Muda squad.

“Playing in a 3-4-3 formation, I’m like a lone striker and have to adapt accordingly. It’s a new experience for me and I’m getting used to it.”

Maniam decided to take his chances with Mahali, as he saw him play during his time as coach of the Selangor youth team. And a thankful Mahali said that the experience of playing again as a striker gave him a different dimension and he’s obviously happy to the job for Maniam.

And so far it has been a good run for Mahali who has played 11 of Pj City 13 matches this season. Although he has yet to score, he made two assists and is known for his ability to bring other players into attacks with hold-up plays and movement.

“I want to thank the coach for his faith in my ability and the encouragement he has given to make me to help me make good in the game.

“The PJ City team suits me best and their move to use all the local players opens up chances for players like me to play.

“Now, we have to work hard ahead of the restart of the Super League competition and hopefully we can improve on our standings at the end of the season,” said Mahali.

PJ City are currently eighth in the league with 15 points and play Sabah on July 24 when the league resumes.
