PETALING JAYA: National track cycling queen Nurul Izzah Izzati Mohd Asri came up short in her title defence of the women's elite keirin title at the Asian Cycling Championships in Tagaytay, Philippines on Thursday (March 26).
The 22-year-old made the top-six final but had to surrender the keirin title she had won for the last two years after only finishing fifth while Nur Alyssa Mohd Farid finished seventh to end the day on a sour note at the Tagaytay City Velodrome.
Yuan Liying, 20, fresh from winning the Track World Cup opening round in Perth, Australia earlier this month, continued her stunning rise by clinching the gold while her Chinese compatriot Wang Lijuan was second.
Japan's Haruka Nakazawa completed the podium.
In the men's elite keirin, Mohd Fadhil Zonis was the best finisher with a fourth place finish while teammate Mohd Ridwan Sahrom placed seventh.
China continued their domination in the men's elite keirin as well as Li Zhiwei picked up the gold ahead of compatriot Xie Han and third placed Kang Shi Feng of Taiwan.
