Aaron says three other pairs great as sparring partners

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Aaron Chia believes the presence of three national pairs joining them for training in Herning will be crucial in Malaysia’s bid to end a 34-year Thomas Cup title drought.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have brought in pairs Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing and Choong Hon Jian-Goh Boon Zhe as sparring partners during their stay in Herning.

The trio will also assist the women’s squad in their Uber Cup preparations.

Aaron said the presence of these sparring partners during the eight-day centralised camp was important.

All training sessions will be closed-door, except for possible match simulations, which may be open to the public to help recreate a competitive match atmosphere.

“I think sparring partners are important because we brought them not only to help the Thomas Cup squad, but also to assist the Uber Cup team.

“They add value in our preparation as a team during these eight days before the Thomas Cup. That is what I hope for,” said Aaron.

Aaron added that he was unfazed by the strong line-ups fielded by other nations ahead of this year’s Thomas Cup.

Malaysia have been drawn in Group B with Japan, England and Finland, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals.

“It’s fine. The important thing is to do our best, and whoever is given the chance to step on court must give their all,” he added.
