BUKIT JALIL: No charges will be imposed on professional men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia should he wish to seek treatment at the National Sport Institute (NSI).
That assurance was given by NSI chief executive officer Dr P. Vellapandian to the Paris Olympics bronze medallist if he intends to obtain the best possible treatment in preparation for the Thomas Cup Finals in Horsens, Denmark from April 23-May 3.
Vellapandian explained that although Zii Jia is not under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), the NSI are prepared to provide complimentary services as he will still be representing the country.
Typically, BAM players enjoy free treatment at the NSI, while professional players bear their own medical expenses as they operate independently.
"We are aware that Zii Jia and his team are not under BAM, so they are a separate entity. However, as long as he is wearing the Malaysian jersey and competing overseas, the NSI will support him," said Vellapandian when contacted.
Previously, BAM performance committee chairman Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei had advised Zii Jia to consult the NSI if he required assistance to better prepare for the Thomas Cup.
Zii Jia’s presence is viewed as crucial in strengthening the current singles line-up as BAM are serious about ending a 34-year Thomas Cup title drought, having last lifted the trophy in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur.
However, Vellapandian stressed that if Zii Jia are interested, he and his camp, Team LZJ, must first submit a request to facilitate the provision of medical services.
"As he has his own team, I do not want to suddenly offer our services. But if he makes a request, we will certainly provide them free of charge.
"Earlier this year he also came for a medical consultation with the NSI. We did not charge him as he represents Malaysia. As for the latest situation, we have yet to receive any confirmation from his side," he added.
The NSI have also opened their doors to Zii Jia for any assistance required, including the use of gym facilities to help him regain peak condition.
Zii Jia, who struggled with injury issues last year, sparked concern after withdrawing from this week’s German Open.
However, the 27-year-old informed Chong Wei that it was not a serious injury and requested time until Friday to finalise his decision on whether to join the Thomas Cup squad.
