Indonesia go all local with Mulyo as the head

PETALING JAYA: Indonesia have unveiled their coaching set-up by naming Taufik Hidayat’s coach Mulyo Handoyo (pic, below) as their chief coach.

In an elaborate coaching staff list released by the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) yesterday, they have decided to keep all local coaches to revive the status of the nation as one of badminton’s powerhouses.

Indonesia have also given Mulyo a double duty as he will also take charge of the men’s singles department.

The other main coaches are Antonius Budi Arianto (men’s doubles), Iman Tohari (women’s singles), Karel Mainaky (women’s doubles), and Riony Mainaky (mixed doubles).

Karel and Riony are Malaysia’s national coaching director Rexy’s brothers.

Antonius has taken over from Herry Iman Pierngadi, who had served the men’s doubles department for almost two decades.

Herry’s exit was inevitable as the standard of the men’s doubles department had dropped. The exits of their top stars Hendra Setiawan-Mohamed Ahsan is expected to see new faces coming to the fore.

With Indonesia all set with their coaching team, expect Malaysia’s rivals to step up and be a force to be reckoned with at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
