PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi played a key role in Auburn University’s history-making performance as the Tigers shattered the NCAA Division One men’s 4x100m relay record at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday (June 10).
Auburn clocked a blistering 37.75s in the semi-finals to break the previous collegiate record of 37.90s set by LSU in May 2023.
The record-breaking quartet comprised Azeem, Kayinsola Ajayi, Austin Kresley and Tyler Davis, who combined brilliantly to rewrite the NCAA record books.
The achievement adds another milestone to Azeem’s growing collegiate career in the United States and further highlights his contribution to one of the fastest sprint relay teams in NCAA history.
But, Azeem failed to secure his place in the men’s 100m semi-finals after finishing fourth in heat two of the preliminaries with a time of 10.21s. In the overall standings, he was 17th our of 23 sprinters.
His Auburn teammate Israel Okon won the heat in 10.07s, followed by Middle Tennessee’s Mustapha Bokpin (10.09s) and Houston’s Louis Hinchliffe (10.18s).
