PETALING JAYA: National middle distance runner Umar Osman (pic) continued his impressive run at the New Taipei City Athletics Open by winning silver in the men’s 800m event on Sunday.
The 22-year-old clocked a time of 1:49.40s, coming in just behind Australia’s Alex Twartz, who set a time of 1:47.94s while home runner Jyun Siang-huang took bronze with 1:49.54s at the Taiwan National Stadium.
Umar’s time saw him improve on his season’s best of 1:50.19s, set at the Bangkok SEA Games in December.
Wan Fazri Wan Mohd Zahari came in seventh overall with his time of 1:50.92s.
On Saturday, the Johor-born Umar had smashed the national 400m record in style.
He clocked 45.73s to come in first in the semi-finals, breaking his previous national record of 46.09s, which he set at the FISU World University Games in China in 2023.
However, he was forced to settle for silver after finishing with a time of 46.42s to come in behind Australia’s Brenton Kerr, who won with 46.22s.
In the women’s 200m heats, Nur Aishah Rofina Aling came in 13th with a time of 25.02s.
