Archers get off to slow start in Paris

PETALING JAYA: The women recurve trio of Ariana Nur Dania Mohd Zairi, Syaqiera Mashayikh and Nurul Azreena Fazil swung into early action, finishing 10th out of 12 teams in the ranking rounds for the team event at Les Invalides today (Thursday).

The trio, who have gone through three practice sessions in Paris, posted a combined total of 1,918 points to finish just ahead of Britain (1,912) and Holland (1,897).

Syaqiera, who is competing in her second straight Olympics, was the best individual performer today.

The 24-year-old shot a personal best score of 663 points to place 14th out of 64 archers in the individual ranking rounds.

Olympic debutants Ariana and Azreena finished 50th (633) and 60th (622) respectively.

The formidable South Korea women did not disappoint as they sent a strong message to their rivals, combining for a total of 2,046 points to beat their own Olympic record of 2,032 set in Tokyo three years ago.

China took second spot with 1,996 points ahead of Mexico (1,986). South Korea occupied the top two individual spots as Lim Si-hyeon shot her way to a new world record mark of 694.

The Malaysian women team will now take on SEA Games arch rival Indonesia for a place in the quarter-finals of the women's team competition this Sunday.
