Thumbs down as archer Juwaidi fails

Out to make amends: Juwaidi Mazuki found the going tough in his individual compound competition but has promised to go all out in the team and mixed pair events.

NATIONAL compound archer Juwaidi Mazuki had planned to go all the way in the individual round, but his equipment let him down.

Juwaidi revealed that during his individual quarter-finals, his thumb release was faulty, which affected his pulls and release, especially in the third and fourth end.

The 33-year-old lost his quarter-final match against South Korean Joo Jae-hoon 135-148 at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre.

“I should have had no problem facing him (Jae-hoon) because he is a junior archer. Blaming the equipment is not the best but that is what happened,” said Juwaidi, who is taking part in his third Asian Games, having made his debut in Incheon 2014.

“The time was too short, so I could not do anything. I had to let it go and focus on the rest of my shots.

“The thumb release was suddenly faulty. Before the event, I did check and everything but it just happened during the competition.”

Juwaidi will feature in the mixed pair with Fatin Nurfateheh Mat Salleh today and the men’s team quarter-finals tomorrow.

In the mixed, Juwaidi and Fatin will take on India’s Pravin Ojas-Surekha Vennam for a place in the semis, while in the team event, Juwaidi, Alang Ariff Aqil Mohd Ghaz and Mohd Syafiq Mohd Ariffin will take on Iran.

“For the team, we really need to step up our game to go to the semi-final. As for the mixed event we will give our best because the Indian pair are quite strong,” he said.

“I will not let my individual outing affect my performance in the team and mixed pair events.

“I am telling myself to bounce back. I am experienced enough to handle these setbacks.”
