THE announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (Auku) will be abolished marks an important turning point for Malaysian higher education.
Much of the immediate discussion has understandably focused on student freedom. But Auku has never been merely about regulating student activities. For more than five decades, it has also formed part of the legal framework governing public universities.
