Punishment alone cannot solve cybercrime problem

MALAYSIA’S proposed Cyber-crime Bill, expected to be tabled in Parliament soon, is a timely response to the sharp rise in online fraud and technology- enabled crime. With reported losses exceeding RM2.9bil in 2025 alone – an increase of more than 86% from the previous year – cybercrime has become a serious national concern that affects economic stability and public trust.

From deepfake impersonation to automated scam networks, criminals are exploiting digital tools faster than safeguards can adapt. In this context, replacing the outdated Computer Crimes Act with a comprehensive Cybercrime Bill aligned with international standards is both necessary and overdue.
