PHNOM PENH: In just 15 days, from Feb 3 to Feb 18, Phnom Penh authorities conducted a sweep of 2,709 suspected scam locations, discovering 21,104 foreigners, including 6,683 women.

According to the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Technology Crimes (CCTC), the locations raided included buildings, condominiums, apartments, gated communities, guesthouses and hotels across all 14 districts of the capital.

“During these 15 days, authorities also cracked down on 40 other crime locations, detaining 284 foreign nationals, including 31 women, from 13 nationalities: Vietnam, China, Myanmar, South Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan and Singapore,” added a CCTC report.

It explained that the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner's Office built has so far sent 11 cases to court, involving 22 Chinese ringleaders and their direct accomplices, 1 Singaporean and 1 Cambodian.

“The prime minister of Cambodia has clearly stated in the past that Cambodia is not a place that cybercriminals can use for fraud or cross-border crimes.

“The individuals or entities behind these fraudulent activities will face the highest penalties without any leniency or intervention. These measures, both implemented and ongoing, will enable Cambodia to move towards eliminating technology-based fraud in the future,” said the CCTC. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
