RECENT reports of Nipah virus cases in India have understandably raised concerns among the public in Malaysia. Nipah virus infection is indeed a serious disease, with a high case fatality rate, and it has been rightly prioritised by the World Health Organisation for epidemic preparedness.
However, it is important to emphasise that these recent detections do not signal a new or escalating global threat, nor do they indicate an imminent risk to Malaysia.
