Swift action needed to protect domestic steel industry

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has recently announced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports into the United States. Part of a broader strategy to reshape international trade relations, the tariffs are set to take effect on March 4, 2025 without any exemptions for any countries.

In response to Trump’s statement, Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry Federation (Misif) wishes to highlight that the direct consequences of the 25% tariffs remain uncertain but are expected to accelerate trade diversion, leading to a surge of steel products into the Malaysian market.
