The disabled are not second class citizens


THE article “Historic win for OKU rights”, published in The Star on Jan 17 (online at tinyurl.com/yadfechp), prompted me to write this letter.

It is appalling that many of us treat special needs people like second class citizens. Most of us subscribe to a faith, whether that’s Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinduism, etc, and each of these teaches its followers to be compassionate and care for others. How then can we ignore the plight of special needs children and adults? Are they not human beings and God’s creations too?
