Ready to help end the littering problem

WE refer to the report “Serial litterbugs to clean toilets if proposed amendments passed, says Nga,” (The Star, Sept 28).

The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) fully supports the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s proposal to amend the Local Government Act 1976 to incorporate community service as a form of punishment for serial litterbugs.

This proactive approach aimed at punishing serial litterbugs by making them clean public spaces such as drains and toilets is long overdue. It will also create awareness and encourage a culture of cleanliness and responsibility among Malaysians.

Countries like Singapore, Norway and Sweden have successfully implemented similar measures and reduced littering incidents by making the consequences more visible and hands-on.

As part of our broader sustainability initiative, MPMA organises campaigns that promote responsible consumer behaviour, such as proper plastics disposal and recycling. This ties in with the government’s anti-littering campaigns, which MPMA supports by raising awareness about the detrimental effects of littering.

Since 2015, MPMA has been organising “Don’t Be a Litterbug” campaigns to address the need for individual responsibility in waste disposal. The campaign has been implemented at national festivals and public events such as Thaipusam and Chingay celebrations, marathons, Ramadan bazaars and night markets.

During the campaigns, the public are also educated on how to correctly separate waste into recyclables and non-recyclables to encourage the adoption of waste separation at source (SAS) among Malaysian households.

This effort is crucial because only through the effective implementation of SAS can the value of recyclables, including plastics, be realised.

By ensuring that recyclable materials are correctly sorted, they can be directed to recycling facilities where they are transformed into new products. This not only reduces waste but also promotes a circular economy.

This nationwide initiative aligns with the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s efforts to combat littering and promote environmental responsibility.

By working together, we can ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
