For almost two decades, a growing group of like-minded Malaysians have been discussing and promoting the idea that the values of thinking and compassion are fundamental to creating and sustaining a civilised society. These values will also ensure that true nation-building is possible so that every Malaysian will have a rightful place under the sun.
Nation-building is a complex and multifaceted process. It requires careful consideration, strategy, and planning. Without doubt, it also requires the collective efforts of a nation’s citizens. Hence, the people need to be united and focused on the common objective of nation-building. We should not be distracted by self-serving political power plays.
While various factors contribute to the success of nation- building, one element stands out as fundamental: critical thinking. The ability to think critically plays a crucial role in shaping the future of a nation, fostering progress, and addressing the myriad challenges a nation faces. It is impossible for a nation to progress and become a useful civilisation if the citizens do not think critically – or worse, if they are systematically indoctrinated not to think critically.
Firstly, critical thinking goes beyond conventional thinking patterns and encourages individuals to explore new possibilities.
There must exist the humility that we do not know our potential until we try. We must also be aware that we cannot expect the future to be better if we keep repeating past ways that have bogged us down.
Hence, by questioning existing norms, citizens can identify hidden talents, resources, and untapped potential within their nation. This can lead to the discovery of innovative industries, sustainable development projects, and economic diversification strategies.
Critical thinking citizens are more likely to challenge traditional approaches and seek alternative solutions, fostering a culture of creativity and entrepreneurship that drives national progress
Secondly, nation-building involves grappling with complex societal issues that require comprehensive understanding and analyses.
Critical thinking equips citizens with the ability to break down intricate problems into manageable components, facilitating a deeper comprehension of the underlying factors at play. By critically examining interconnected challenges such as poverty, inequality, and effective use of the nation’s scare resources, critical thinkers can identify root causes and develop holistic strategies for sustainable development. This analytical approach enables policymakers to implement targeted interventions that address multiple issues simultaneously.
If citizens do not think critically, the nation’s problems will never be solved because irresponsible politicians will keep creating distractions to cover their inability to deal with the root of problems besetting the nation.
Thirdly, in nation-building, decision-making carries significant weight as it shapes the direction of a nation’s progress.
Critical thinking empowers individuals to evaluate information critically, assess its reliability, and consider a broad range of perspectives. By weighing the pros and cons, citizens can make informed decisions that prioritise the long-term interests of the nation over short-term gains. Such thinking promotes evidence-based policies that align with the people’s aspirations.
We need to understand that the decision-making process is influenced by a variety of factors, such as existing laws, societal norms, culture, religious influence, and so on. This is where evidence-based policies become fundamental, especially in a nation like Malaysia where there is always the political temptation to pander to imagined racial and religious factors.
Fourthly, innovation is a vital catalyst for economic growth and societal advancement.
Critical-thinking stimulates the generation of fresh ideas, as it encourages individuals to challenge conventional wisdom and explore new approaches. By nurturing a culture of critical thinking, nations create an environment that fosters creativity, embraces change, and supports technological advancements.
Critical thinkers are more open to embracing disruptive technologies, adopting sustainable practices, and adapting to global trends, enabling nations to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving world. This is the reality of the world which only such thinkers will understand. We need to ask if Malaysia’s true progress has been slowed down for decades due to a lack of innovative activities.
Fifth, critical thinking is fundamental for the functioning of a democratic society.
Informed citizens who think critically are more likely to engage in civic activities, participate in elections, and contribute to the democratic process. They know that idolisation of political leaders is a sure recipe for dictatorship, nepotism, and cronyism. By questioning political rhetoric, analysing policy proposals, and holding leaders accountable, citizens can ensure transparent and accountable governance.
Thinking citizens are able to identify misinformation, distinguish between fact and fiction, and make informed decisions when choosing representatives. This strengthens democratic institutions and reinforces the principles of fairness, justice, and equality.
Sixth, nation-building involves cultivating a sense of unity and social cohesion among diverse peoples.
Malaysia is a nation blessed with diversity. We have rightly and courageously chosen the model of integration for our diverse population. Critical thinking plays a pivotal role in this by encouraging Malaysians to challenge our biases, stereotypes, and prejudices. By critically examining our own beliefs and engaging in respectful dialogue with others, we can bridge social divides and foster inclusive communities.
Critical thinking skills enable citizens to understand and empathise with different perspectives, promoting tolerance, respect, and cultural exchange. This facilitates the creation of a Malaysia that values diversity and harnesses our potential for collective progress.
Ultimately, critical thinking is a foundational element in the process of nation-building.
By unleashing potential, navigating complexity, enhancing decision-making, fostering innovation, strengthening democratic governance, and promoting social cohesion, critical thinking becomes a driving force behind sustainable development and societal progress.
Recognising the value of critical thinking and integrating it into education, policymaking, and public discourse is crucial for us to thrive in an ever-changing global landscape.
