Exploring the versatility of saree

Indian women have a deep love for saree.

That includes me.

This beautifully woven garment is a cornerstone of our culture and tradition.

Often worn during festivals, weddings and significant events, the saree is a symbol of heritage and identity.

With an endless array of fabrics, colours and patterns, there’s a saree to suit every taste and season – from lightweight cottons perfect for warm days to luxurious silks ideal for festive occasions.

Plus, they flatter all body types and can be styled in countless ways, allowing for personal expression.

Many women go to great lengths to find the perfect saree for each occasion.

It is a delightful experience to be surrounded by vibrant colours, intricate patterns and rich textures.

We see it as an opportunity to discover unique pieces that reflect personal style and cultural heritage.

Many enjoy the thrill of trying on different styles, experimenting with various draping techniques and finding the perfect match for each event.

Sharing this experience with friends or family can make it even more special, as you exchange opinions and celebrate each other’s choices.

However, despite efforts put into selecting them, it is quite common for women to avoid repeated wearing of a saree, especially within the same social circle, for several years.

Perhaps this is due to the social expectations of wearing something new or different at every event.

I feel that this is a significant waste of these beautiful garments.

After all, saree can be quite expensive, particularly those made from silk and crafted by skilled artisans.

With such a wide variety of saree available, many of us enjoy collecting them as a hobby too.

Each saree often tells a story of cultural heritage and artistry, transforming them into valuable pieces of art.

So, if you have one of these treasures, it should be flaunted as often as possible!

It’s a way to honour the artisans whose meticulous craftsmanship brings intricate patterns and designs to life.

One of my favourite ways to do this is by sharing with family members.

I’ve made a pact with the women in my family to swap saree, giving us all access to each other’s beautiful collections.

This way, we can enjoy a wider variety of styles and fabrics, without needing to buy new ones all the time.

Another alternative is to wear the same saree with different blouses or draping styles, achieving a fresh look each time.

This allows us to reinvent the saree and express our personal styles while keeping things exciting.

If a saree gets damaged for any reason, I recycle the fabric into stylish tops, skirts, dresses, scarves, bags, accessories, home decor items or even children’s clothing.

This way, the fabric gets a new lease on life while retaining its beauty and significance.

In this last weekend before Deepavali, excitement for the festival is palpable.

Celebrants are bustling about, doing last-minute preparations such as making muruku, cleaning, decorating their homes and shopping for new clothes.

For many women, saree shopping is a must.

My advice? If you love it, buy it and wear it to its fullest glory! And don’t forget to share later.

That said, be mindful not to buy too many, as there will always be another saree you’ll want.

I know women who have cupboards full of saree that have only been worn once or twice.

Focus on quality over quantity, investing in pieces you truly love.

If you keep accumulating, you might find your wardrobe overflowing and your wallet feeling lighter.

Worse is if the saree get ruined due to poor storage.

A well-made saree can last for decades, making it a sustainable choice too.

They can be passed down through generations, becoming cherished family heirlooms.

Stunning garments deserve to be seen and cherished, not hidden away.

We should normalise sharing and rewearing saree.

It is a graceful garment that enhances the wearer’s beauty.

It is both modest and alluring, making it a timeless choice of clothing.

So let’s flaunt these gorgeous swathes of fabric, share our love for them and create new memories this Deepavali.

May our celebrations be filled with light, laughter and the vibrant colours of our beloved saree.

Happy Deepavali!
