U.S. stocks close higher


NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended higher on Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 693.38 points, or 1.32 percent, to 53,178.41. The S&P 500 added 110.78 points, or 1.48 percent, to 7,600.5. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 540.04 points, or 2.13 percent, to 25,913.9.

Eight of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in the green, with communication services and consumer discretionary leading the gainers by adding 4.3 percent and 2.68 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy and consumer staples led the laggards by going down 1.23 percent and 0.31 percent, respectively.
