MOGADISHU, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Somali National Army (SNA) repelled an attack by al-Shabab militants on a military base in the south-central region on Sunday, the government confirmed.
The Ministry of Defense said that a large-scale operation, involving reconnaissance and security sweeps, is ongoing to eliminate any remaining militants in the Jabad Godane area, prevent regrouping, and ensure the safety of local communities.
"The SNA now has full control of the area, after dealing the enemy a decisive blow and inflicting heavy losses," the ministry said in a statement from the capital, Mogadishu, without releasing casualty figures.
Al-Shabab, which seeks to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government, claimed responsibility for attacks on four bases near the Warsheikh district. The group alleged that it killed 21 soldiers, wounded 11 others, and seized armored vehicles and weapons.
The latest military operation occured as Somali security forces are ramping up offensives against al-Shabab militants across Somalia. Government troops, supported by international partners, have been conducting joint operations to secure and consolidate control in central and southern regions.
