U.S. stocks close lower


NEW YORK, May 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended lower on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 537.29 points, or 1.07 percent, to 49,526.17. The S&P 500 sank 92.74 points, or 1.24 percent, to 7,408.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 410.07 points, or 1.54 percent, to 26,225.15.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in the red, with materials and utilities leading the laggards by losing 2.74 percent and 2.40 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, energy bucked the trend by going up 2.32 percent.
