QuickCheck: Are drivers getting a 100% toll discount for Hari Raya?

WITH "balik kampung" season in full swing, any relief on highway costs is always welcome news for Malaysian drivers.

Claims have been circulating suggesting that motorists will enjoy a full 100% toll discount across the country during the Hari Raya period.

But is the discount really that generous?

Verdict:

FALSE

Drivers will not be getting a 100% toll discount for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period. The actual discount announced by the government is 50%.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on March 17 that a 50% discount on toll charges would be offered nationwide in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the discount would begin at 12.01am on March 18 and end at 11.59pm on March 19, covering a 48-hour window.

"This initiative aims to reduce travel costs for the public returning to their hometowns," he said at a weekly press conference in Putrajaya on Tuesday (March 17).

The discount applies only to Class 1 private vehicles, which include cars, SUVs and light vehicles with two axles and three to four wheels.

It does not apply to tolls at the country's border crossings, namely the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas in Johor.

The initiative is expected to cost the government approximately RM21.03mil in compensation to toll concession companies.

The 50% discount is consistent with what was offered during Hari Raya Aidilfitri in 2025, and is part of a broader package of festive relief measures announced by the government.
