WHEN you think of a bunny eating a carrot, what comes to mind?
Did you picture Bugs Bunny, the iconic Warner Bros character who often starts a conversation with "Eh, what’s up, Doc?" while chomping on a carrot?
Has it ever occurred to you that maybe rabbits aren’t meant to eat carrots like that?
Are carrots actually a natural part of their daily diet?
Verdict:
FALSE
Yes, we’ve been lied to our whole lives. Carrots are not a natural staple in a rabbit’s diet. It was all a myth!
So, who started this myth? We can largely thank Bugs Bunny himself.
Bugs popularising carrots wasn't a random choice. It was actually a parody, meant to mimic actor Clark Gable munching on a carrot in the 1934 film It Happened One Night.
However, the creators probably didn’t realise how impactful their character would become, to the point of convincing generations of kids and adults that rabbits eat carrots daily.
In reality, carrots aren't ideal for rabbits. They contain complex carbohydrates that are hard for rabbits to digest.
Carrots are also very high in sugar, which can lead to digestive issues, tooth decay and other health problems.
This isn’t to say rabbits can’t eat carrots at all, but they should only be an occasional treat, not part of their daily diet.
A rabbit’s diet should consist mainly of hay, leafy greens and a small number of pellets for minerals, vitamins and fibre.
So, if you’re thinking of getting a pet rabbit, please don’t just feed it carrots, as this can seriously shorten its lifespan.
